Mitsubishi and Toyota have played a significant role in the development of the automotive industry in Southeast Asia. After World War II, Japan used the automotive sector to drive economic recovery and established deep investment and technology transfer relationships in the region. These companies not only built production bases in countries like Indonesia and Thailand but also promoted regional economic development through technical training and localization of supply chains. Statistics show that from 2020 to 2022, Japan's investment in the automotive manufacturing sector in Southeast Asia reached 12.3 billion US dollars, directly contributing 3.2% to 4.5% of GDP and creating over 250,000 jobs. Despite competition from South Korean and Chinese automakers, Mitsubishi and Toyota continue to invest in electric vehicles, aiming to achieve 40% electric vehicle production in Southeast Asia by 2030.
