BMW Tests Large-Format All-Solid-State Batteries in i7 Prototype
BMW has integrated large-format all-solid-state battery (ASSB) technology into its i7 test vehicle, which is being operated in Munich. Similar to Mercedes-Benz’s EQS prototype tested earlier this year, BMW’s ASSB battery combines Gen5 construction principles with innovative module concepts using sulfide-based electrolytes from Solid Power. Offering higher energy density, ASSB batteries can provide longer ranges without increasing system weight. BMW has been collaborating with Solid Power since 2016, investing in the company in 2021 and deepening the partnership in 2022 to operate a solid cell prototype line at the CMCC in Parsdorf.
