Chery International has confirmed the introduction of an all-new Jaecoo J5 model for 2025. The new model will be the smallest offering from the premium brand, positioned below the upcoming J6 EV. Unlike the J6, which is available solely as an electric vehicle, the J5 will come in both hybrid electric (HEV) and pure electric vehicle (EV) forms. The J5's design is reminiscent of the J7, with a resemblance to the latest Range Rover's monolithic design. Given that the J6 is already compact at around 4,400 mm in length, the J5 will be even more so, potentially competing with the BYD Dolphin and MG4, but with a taller SUV body and a pseudo-premium brand badge. If priced competitively, the stylish J5 could be popular among the young and trendy. It is expected that the J5 will eventually make its way to the Malaysian market, given Chery International's recent track record of quickly bringing its models to the local market. Additionally, a new flagship J9 model has been announced, with details limited to its availability in plug-in hybrid (PHEV) and EV forms, indicating busy years ahead for the burgeoning premium brand.

Honda and Toyota Collaborate to Counter US Tariffs, Accelerating Japanese Automakers' Supply Chain Restructuring
Honda plans to source around 400,000 hybrid vehicle batteries from Toyota’s North Carolina plant to circumvent tariffs imposed by US President Donald Trump. Toyota’s $14 billion factory, its first battery plant outside Japan, will begin production next month. This move is part of a broader trend among Japanese automakers to restructure supply chains in response to US tariffs. Demand for efficient hybrids is rising in the US, while President Trump plans to scrap his predecessor’s initiative to promote electric vehicles. By 2030, hybrid vehicle sales in the US are projected to double last year’s figure to 4.12 million units, accounting for a quarter of new car sales. Honda aims to sell 1.3 million hybrids globally (excluding China) by 2030, a 50% increase from last year. However, Trump’s trade policies pose challenges, with a 20% tariff on Chinese imports and plans to raise tariffs on Japanese car imports from 2.5% to 25%. Japan exports 1.3 million cars to the US annually, and the tariff hike is expected to cost Japan’s six major automakers approximately $20 billion.
