The Jaecoo J7 PHEV, first unveiled at Auto China 2024 in Beijing last month, was also displayed at the recent Malaysia Autoshow 2024, where the brand previewed its all-electric J6 model. The J7 PHEV is powered by a 1.5-liter TGDi petrol engine with a thermal efficiency of 44.5% and a dedicated hybrid transmission (DHT) coupled with an electric motor, producing a combined output of 347 PS and 525 Nm of torque. The plug-in hybrid SUV can travel up to 88 km on battery power alone, with a claimed fuel consumption of 4.9 l/100 km in full hybrid operation. A notable feature of the J7 PHEV is its DC fast charging capability, highlighted by the presence of a CCS2 charging port, and it also includes V2L functionality for external power output. Although specific details on the J7 PHEV are limited, the right-hand-drive show car suggests the model's market introduction in Malaysia may be imminent. The interior of the J7 PHEV is similar to the ICE-powered J7, featuring a 10.25-inch driver's instrument display and a 14.8-inch portrait-oriented touchscreen infotainment system. The center console is notably different, with the omission of the transmission selector lever, and the drive mode selector is now part of a simplified button layout. At its preview in January, the J7 was estimated to be priced from around RM150k for the FWD variant and RM160k for the AWD variant in its petrol-powered forms.

Honda and Toyota Collaborate to Counter US Tariffs, Accelerating Japanese Automakers' Supply Chain Restructuring
Honda plans to source around 400,000 hybrid vehicle batteries from Toyota’s North Carolina plant to circumvent tariffs imposed by US President Donald Trump. Toyota’s $14 billion factory, its first battery plant outside Japan, will begin production next month. This move is part of a broader trend among Japanese automakers to restructure supply chains in response to US tariffs. Demand for efficient hybrids is rising in the US, while President Trump plans to scrap his predecessor’s initiative to promote electric vehicles. By 2030, hybrid vehicle sales in the US are projected to double last year’s figure to 4.12 million units, accounting for a quarter of new car sales. Honda aims to sell 1.3 million hybrids globally (excluding China) by 2030, a 50% increase from last year. However, Trump’s trade policies pose challenges, with a 20% tariff on Chinese imports and plans to raise tariffs on Japanese car imports from 2.5% to 25%. Japan exports 1.3 million cars to the US annually, and the tariff hike is expected to cost Japan’s six major automakers approximately $20 billion.
