Digital Minister: Adjustments to Laws Needed to Accommodate Autonomous Vehicles and AI Development
Digital Minister Gobind Singh highlighted that the current legal framework may not be sufficient to accommodate the development of AI and autonomous vehicle technology. He pointed out that Malaysia's laws currently prohibit driverless vehicles on public roads, creating a conflict with future technological advancements. In the event of an accident involving autonomous vehicles without a legal definition, insurance claims may face legal hurdles. Speaking at the ASEAN-GCC Economic Forum, Singh noted that insurers are unlikely to cover or accept claims for driverless vehicles under the current legal structure. However, with autonomous vehicles expected to become commonplace globally within the next five years, the government needs to adjust existing regulations to adapt to emerging technologies. Autonomous buses are already being tested in Putrajaya and Cyberjaya, but the legal foundation remains inadequate. The Ministry of Digital is currently consulting with industry stakeholders to explore feasible directions for legal adjustments.
