Mazda Ditches CHAdeMO for North American Charging Standard
Mazda has announced that its EVs launched in the Japanese market from 2027 onwards will abandon the CHAdeMO charging port in favor of the North American Charging Standard (NACS). This move allows Mazda vehicles to access Tesla Superchargers in Japan, which use the NACS connector. Mazda follows Sony Honda Mobility (SHM), which was the first Japanese automaker to adopt NACS for its Afeela EV range. As the first mainstream company to make this switch, Mazda's decision is likely to trigger a domino effect, leading other automakers to abandon CHAdeMO. CHAdeMO has long been a niche standard, mainly used in Japan and lagging behind others like Europe's CCS2 in charging speeds. Japan's shift to NACS may also prompt South Korea, which uses CCS1, to follow suit, driven by the desire to connect to Tesla's Supercharger network.
